I have recently participated in the initiative dedicated to the European Nights of Moths. I was curious, because I had never participated before and I wanted to take photos as a record of the event. Coordinating this moth activity, which took place in the Serra do Caramulo (centre of Portugal), was Fernando Romão and Eduardo Marabuto, a great expert in this field. The weather did not help much, it was far from a typical hot August night. In the middle of the mountain and at an altitude close to one thousand metres, it was cold, windy, with fog and rain. The logistics for this activity is quite complex. You need a generator, fuel, long cables, jacks, tripods, white cloths and ultraviolet lamps, among other things. Pounds of equipment! The cloths are spread on the ground. The tripods as well as the lamps are spread across different locations. This time, we created three points of light, scattered through the woods. Shortly after lighting the lamps, you can see the moths "falling" on the cloth, attracted by this strange light! In order to prevent the moths flying away again, small boxes are put over them, until they are identified. Later they are released. During this first night, over 40 species were identified. I came down the mountain at nearly eleven o'clock at night, because I had to return home. They continued into the night. It was worthwhile. Here are some of the many photographs I took.
› At dusk begin to make the preparations to attract moths (a flashlight in the woods). › Digital, 105 mm, 250 ISO, 60 seconds of exposure, tripod.
› A Lasiocampa trifolii one of the species identified in the Caramulo mountains. › Digital, 105 mm, flash, ISO 200. More than 40 species were identified on the first night.
› Digital, zoom 12-24 mm, flash.
› The future biologist Tatiana Moreira puts boxes on the moths before subsequently identifying them. Digital, 12-24 mm zoom, flash.
› Digital, zoom 12-24 mm, flash, 400 ISO.
› General appearance of white cloth and ultraviolet lamp where the moths are attracted. › Digital 12-24 mm zoom, flash, ISO 400.
› A strange light in the woods during the night indicates the place in which we work. › Digital, 105 mm, 250 ISO, 50 seconds of exposure, tripod.

ehehhehe a hell of a night! :P
