É sempre um prazer regressar ao Alentejo › It's always a pleasure to return to the Alentejo

Acabo de regressar de uma ida ao Alentejo (e Lisboa) a fim de preparar alguns trabalhos que tenho planeados para os próximos meses. Aproveitando a ida a uma das regiões que me é bastante familiar, tentei tirar algum tempo para fotografar. É sempre um prazer regressar ao Alentejo, mas este ano o panorama infelizmente era um pouco diferente do habitual. A seca era visível em vastas áreas, e o verde habitual desta altura do ano, deu lugar a um castanho desolador. Salvo raras excepções, os cenários para fotografar eram pouco atractivos. Elvas, Campo Maior, Ouguela, Monforte, Arronches e Portalegre, foram alguns locais por onde passei. Em Portalegre, na companhia do fotógrafo e amigo Ricardo Lourenço, apreciei uma excelente refeição de “lagartos de porco preto”. Simplesmente magnífica a gastronomia alentejana, que eu igualmente aprecio. Em Ouguela, não vi as abetardas que costumam por lá andar, mas contentei-me com uns abibes e uns olivais coloridos, que eram alimentados por rega artificial. Regressei já noite cerrada e com cerca de 600 quilómetros percorridos por terras alentejanas. Mais um dia em Lisboa, para rever amigos e por a conversa em dia, e eis que regresso de novo à minha base: o norte. Em Abril regresso de novo ao Alentejo.


I have just returned from a trip to the Alentejo (and Lisbon) to prepare some work I have planned for the coming months. Taking use of a trip to one of the regions which is very familiar to me, I tried to take some time to shoot. It's always a pleasure to return to the Alentejo, but unfortunately this year the scenary was somewhat different from the usual. The drought was visible in large areas and the usual green of this time of the year, gave place to a bleak brown. With few exceptions, the scenes to shoot were unattractive. Elvas, Campo Maior, Ouguela, Monforte, Portalegre and Arronches were some places where I went. In Portalegre, in the company of the photographer and friend Ricardo Lourenço, I enjoyed an excellent meal of pork. Simply a magnificent Alentejo cuisine, which I also appreciate. In Ouguela, I didn’t see the Great Bustards that use to be around, but I contented myself with some colorful Nothern Lapwing and a few olive trees fed by artificial irrigation. After having covered about 600 kilometres through the Alentejo I returned late at night . Another day in Lisbon to meet friends and to chat a little bit, and here I am back to my base: the north. In April I am going to return again to the Alentejo.

A fotografia de natureza tem destas coisas. Por vezes programamos uma saída de trabalho ao pormenor e a coisa não corre bem. Outras, como é o caso de uma visita ocasional, somos surpreendidos por um espectáculo da natureza. Foi o que me aconteceu na zona costeira de Ovar numa manhã gélida bem cedo. Centenas (se não milhares) de pilritos-das-praias (entre outras aves) descansavam e esvoaçavam ao longo da praia do Furadouro, formando autenticas nuvens vivas. Simplesmente fabuloso e uma oportunidade fotográfica que não perdi! Já mais tarde e ao final do dia, centenas de flamingos-comuns descansavam no meio da Ria de Aveiro perto da povoação de Pardilhó, confirmando-se que os flamingos vieram para a ria para ficar. Talvez por esta multiplicidade de vida, confirmei mais uma vez que as zonas húmidas, onde tenho dedicado muito tempo do meu trabalho, continuam a ser um dos meus lugares preferidos para fotografar.

Nature photography has these things. Sometimes, even planning a working day out to detail something goes wrong. Other times, such as an occasional visit, we are surprised by a show of nature. That's what happened to me in the coastal zone of Ovar on a cold early morning. Hundreds (if not thousands) of Sanderlings (among other birds) rested and fluttered along the Furadouro beach, forming authentic living clouds. It was simply fabulous and a photographic opportunity not to lose! Later, at the end of the day, hundreds of Greater Flamingos resting in the middle of the Ria de Aveiro near the village of Pardilhó, confirmed that the flamingos came to the Ria to stay. Perhaps because of this multiplicity of life, I confirmed once again that the wetlands, where I have spent most of my working time, continue to be one of my favourite places to shoot.
